Moomin x Motherhouse: A Crafted Collaboration

Beloved Finnish storybook icons meet Japanese craftsmanship in the new Moomin x Motherhouse collaboration. Celebrating everyday wonder through thoughtful design, the collection reimagines scenes from the world of Moominvalley in finely crafted leather wallets and card cases.

Each piece captures a quiet moment: Snufkin fishing on a still lake, Moominmamma bathed in warm sunlight, or Little My disappearing on another impromptu adventure. These vignettes are brought to life using zōgan, a traditional inlay technique that layers hand-cut leather parts onto gradient-dyed leather, mimicking natural scenery. Embossing and detailed stitching add texture and movement, making the characters appear as though they might step out of the surface at any moment.

The long wallets also feature engraved quotes from the original Moomin books—gentle reminders of imagination and courage, such as Little My’s cheeky, “Everything’s fantastic – more or less,” and Snufkin’s musing, “You must always take risks when experimenting.”
